Veliko Tarnovo is one of Europe's oldest capitals — between 1185 and 1396 it was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, in the golden age of Bulgarian culture. The city is laid out amphitheatre-style above a bend of the Yantra River, with the panorama of Tsarevets fortress dominating the entire city.

🏰 Tsarevets — the fortress

Main fortress of medieval Bulgarian tsars, on the hill above the city. Rebuilt in the 1980s. Includes:

  • Royal Palace — reconstruction of the throne hall.
  • Patriarchal Cathedral "Ascension of the Lord" — modern frescoes by Teofan Sokerov, 1985.
  • Execution Rock — where Patriarch Joakim III was executed by the Ottomans.
  • View — from fortress walls, 360° panorama of the city and Yantra River.

Entry: 10 BGN. Evening audio-visual "Sound and Light" show (summer, Fri–Sat, 30 min).

🛍️ Samovodska Charshia

Revival-era trade street with artisan shops, craft museums, cafes. Whole shops for carpets, icons, wood carvings, rose oil, ceramics. Buy souvenirs here — original, not from Chinese bazaar.

🏛️ Other sights

  • Arbanasi architectural reserve (4 km) — village with 80 revival houses and 5 medieval churches. Church "Nativity of Christ" (16th–17th c.) with over 2000 frescoes.
  • Preobrazhenski Monastery — on the hill outside the city, founded in the 14th c.
  • Museum "Revival and Constituent Assembly" — konak in which the Tarnovo Constitution was adopted (1879).
  • State Art Museum — on island in Yantra.
