Rose Valley (between Stara Planina and Sredna Gora, in central Bulgaria) is home to the oil-bearing rose Damascena — the world's main producer of rose oil (about 50% of world production). 1 kg of rose oil (used in perfumery) requires 3500 kg of rose petals — hence the price of around 5000–8000 EUR/kg. Whole fields between Karlovo, Kalofer and Kazanlak covered with rose plantations.

🌹 Harvest and festivals

Roses bloom in late May–early June. Harvest starts at 4:00 in the morning (when the scent is strongest, before the sun evaporates it). Picking ends at 10:00 — petals go directly to distilleries.

  • Rose Festival in Kazanlak — first weekend of June. Parade in traditional costumes, "Rose Queen" contest, tourist picking, tastings. Main event. Book hotel 6 months in advance — otherwise everything is taken.
  • Festival in Karlovo — last weekend of May, smaller but authentic.

🏛️ What to see besides the roses

  • Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak (UNESCO) — 4th c. BC with unique frescoes. The original is closed for protection, but a 1:1 replica nearby. 6 BGN.
  • Valley of the Thracian Kings (around Shipka) — over 1500 mounds, in which gold treasures have been discovered (in Varna Museum).
  • Shipka — Monument of Freedom on Shipka peak (1934), tribute to Russian and Bulgarian soldiers fallen in the Liberation War (1877). 360° view from 1326 m.
  • Etar — architectural reserve, reconstructed revival settlement with water mills and craftsmen.
  • Kalofer — home of poet Hristo Botev. Museum.

🌹 Distilleries to visit

  • Damascena (Skobelevo) — Bulgaria's largest rose distillery. Tour + tasting, 15 BGN.
  • Enio Bonchev (Tarnichane) — family farm since 1909.
  • Bulgarian Rose Oil (Karlovo) — own rose plantations.

🛍️ What to buy

Rose water (10–15 BGN/bottle), pure rose oil (200 EUR/ml, tiny cap enough for a year), rose face cream, rose soap, rose jam. Authoritative shops: Bulgarian Rose Oil (Kazanlak), Bulgarian Heritage (Sofia).

🚆 How to get there

Kazanlak is 200 km from Sofia (3 hours bus), 100 km from Plovdiv (1.5 hours). Perfect day trip from Plovdiv. For festival: hard to find hotel in Kazanlak — alternative hotels in Stara Zagora (30 km) or Plovdiv.

📅 When to go

Only late May–early June — otherwise no roses. Off-season you can visit distilleries, but no blooming.
