Plovdiv Old Town — 8000 years of culture

Plovdiv is among Europe's oldest continuously inhabited cities — founded around 6000 BC as Thracian settlement Kendrisos, later Philippopolis (named after Philip II of Macedon, Alexander's father), Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Bulgarian. European Capital of Culture 2019. 150 km southeast of Sofia.

🏛️ Ancient Roman theatre

Discovered in the 1970s during tunnel construction. Theatre from the 2nd century (under Emperor Trajan), seats 6000 spectators. Beautifully preserved — today used again for concerts and operas (summer festival, June–September). Ticket: 5 BGN.

🏠 Old Town — revival houses

Maze of cobbled lanes between Aleksandrovska and Nebet Tepe hill. 150 preserved revival houses (18th–19th c.) with rich decoration, colourful facades, overhanging bays. House museums:

  • Balabanova House — typical Plovdiv revival style, 6 BGN.
  • Kuyumdzhioglu House (Ethnographic Museum) — Ottoman-Balkan architecture, 6 BGN.
  • Regional Historical Museum in Lampsadieva House, 5 BGN.
  • Ikonomov Museum — Ottoman period.

🎨 Kapana — art quarter

Former trade quarter (16th–19th c.) with narrow streets and artisans' shops, rebranded in 2014 as creative quarter. Galleries, design shops, cosy bars, restaurants with local products. Perfect for evening walk. Recommended: Hambara (bar), Cat & Mouse (wine bar), Aylyak (cafe).

🏛️ Other sights

  • Nebet Tepe — oldest quarter, Thracian remains, city view.
  • Ancient stadium — part of Roman Philippopolis, under Aleksandrovska street.
  • Dzhumaya Mosque (1364) — one of the oldest Ottoman mosques in Europe.

🍲 Cuisine and wine

Plovdiv is in the heart of the Thracian Lowland — Bulgaria's #1 wine region. Recommended wineries nearby: Villa Yustina (35 km), Bessa Valley (50 km), Castra Rubra (60 km).

Restaurants in Plovdiv: Pavaj (Old Town), Hemingway (Gladstone 10), Smoky (Kapana) — modern Bulgarian fusion.

🚆 How to get there

From Sofia: bus (Centroexpress, 2 hours, 14 BGN) or train (2.5 hours). From Burgas: 4 hours bus. Plovdiv airport (PDV) has only seasonal charters.
