Nesebar (UNESCO 1983) is an old town on a peninsula in the Black Sea, 35 km north of Burgas. One of Europe's oldest cities with continuous history (3000+ years): Thracian Mesembria (7th c. BC), Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Bulgarian, Ottoman. Today — about 11,000 inhabitants, but millions of tourists in summer.

⛪ Medieval churches

On the small peninsula (850 m long) there are 40 preserved medieval churches (5th–14th c.) — incredible concentration. Most important:

  • St Stephen Church (New Metropolis) — 11th–16th c., with 200 m² of frescoes from the 16th c. Museum: 6 BGN.
  • St John Aliturgetos Church — 14th c., in "Nesebar school" style with brick-stone ornaments.
  • St Spas Church — 16th-c. frescoes, well preserved.
  • Hagia Sophia Basilica (Old Metropolis) — 5th–6th c., early Christian. Ruins.
  • Church of Archangels Michael and Gabriel — 13th–14th c.

🏛️ Other sights

  • Archaeological Museum — ancient Mesembria, Greek and Roman finds.
  • Ethnographic Museum — revival life of Greek fishermen.
  • Old town walls — fragments of Thracian wall.
  • Wooden windmills on the isthmus — symbol.

🍴 Cuisine and nightlife

Nesebar is heavily touristy — many restaurants with bad food. Recommended:

  • Captain's Cabin — seafood, at the harbour.
  • Sinia Vekove — traditional Bulgarian.
  • Old Nessebar Restaurant — old house, atmosphere.

Nightlife in Nesebar is quiet (old town). For clubs — neighbouring Sunny Beach (2 km along the beach or 5 min by taxi).

🏖️ Beaches

Old Nesebar has no beach. New Nesebar (on the mainland) has beaches, but the best are in Sunny Beach (1–2 km away). Free (paid sections with sun lounger 10–15 BGN).

🚆 How to get there

Burgas airport (BOJ) is 35 km away. Bus from Burgas (1 hour) or Sunny Beach (10 minutes). Car: easy from Sofia (4 hours) or Varna (1.5 hours).

💡 When to go

June and September — ideal. July–August — disaster (crowds). In winter many churches and museums closed, but old town is beautiful and empty.
