Bansko is Bulgaria's largest ski resort, located at 925 m elevation at the foot of the Pirin mountains. With 75 km of slopes, the longest gondola in the Balkans (Doncheva Koshara, 6.5 km), and terrain for all levels, Bansko hosts FIS World Cup races — since 2009 it has hosted World Cup downhill stages.

Ski area has 75 km of marked slopes (total with trekking routes — over 100 km), divided into 3 levels: Todorka (2746 m) — the peak, with the steepest black slopes, Shiligarnika — middle blue and red for intermediate, Banderitsa — easy greens for beginners and kids. Season: December–April.

  • Ski pass: 1 day 90 BGN (~45 EUR), 6 days 480 BGN. Kids under 12 — 50% off.
  • Doncheva Koshara gondola: from Bansko centre to Todorka base, 25 minutes. Long morning queues — go early (before 9:00) or after lunch 13:00.
  • Ski rental: Pirin Sport, AmiGo, Yeti — around 35–50 BGN/day for equipment.
  • Ski school: Ski School Bansko, private instructor 120 BGN/hour.

🌃 Après-ski and nightlife

Bansko is famous for après-ski — nightlife starts at 16:00 in the base bars. Main street: Pirin Street. Recommended venues:

  • Happy End — legendary après-ski bar, right at the gondola base. Glühwein, shots and live music.
  • Sin City Discotheque — the biggest club in Bansko, open till morning.
  • Niki's Bar — local bar with tavern atmosphere.

🍲 Bulgarian tavern cuisine

Bansko is the heart of Bansko cuisine — Pirin tradition with grilled meat, homemade bread, rakia. Classics:

  • Kapama — dish of meat (lamb or pork), sauerkraut, rice, baked in clay pot in oven. Bansko specialty.
  • Shopska salad — tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, kashkaval cheese, onion.
  • Banitsa — pie with filo dough and cheese, eaten for breakfast.
  • Kebapcheta — minced meat skewers.
  • Rakia — grape or plum brandy, start every meal with a shot.

Recommended taverns: Mehana Dedo Pene (Aleksandar Buynov 1, since 1854), Mehana Molerite, Dabaka.

🚗 How to get there

Bansko is 160 km from Sofia, 220 km from Plovdiv. Buses from Sofia Central Bus Station (3 hours, 25 BGN) or taxi/transfer (around 80 EUR per car). Nearest airport: Sofia (SOF), 2.5 hours by car.

📅 When to go

  • December–March: ski season. January–February — most reliable snow.
  • July–August: summer season, trekking in Pirin (Vihren peak 2914 m), Pirin lakes.
  • May–June and October: off-season, most things closed.
